The ever growing
City of Asheville has swallowed half of Candler. In fact, exit 44 is
within the city limits of Asheville. But to most folks around here, this
is still Candler - or 'Enka-Candler'. Enka took its name from a rayon
plant just west of exit 44. It changed flags a few times and is,
currently, BASF-owned. Who knows about tomorrow. US-19/23 at exit 44 also
takes you directly into west Asheville and is a short cut except during
rush hour. There are a lot of restaurants and other businesses lining this
4-lane route. |
