A hard fought, verry bloody engagement culminating in about 1,000 dead on both sides (about evenly split). The Smith's plantation house served as the Confederate hospital. The dead were buried in the nearby Chicora Cemetery. Who won? Depends who is telling the story. They will tell you all about it here. The Averasboro battleground is included in the N.C. Civil War Trails. |
General William C. Lee Airborne Museum - Housed, with the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce, in the
3-story, early 20th century Neo-classical revival former home of Dunn native Major General William C. Lee. General Lee, the “Father of the U.S. Army Airborne”, earned that title as a result of his tenacious push for the method of military operation now known as Airborne. During World War II, President Roosevelt, accepting General Lee's philosophy, commissioned him to organize Army airborne units which were later used in the D-Day invasion of France. Exhibits include World War II memorabilia, photographs and historical documents and videos. The Cornfield Maze - No, not something created by aliens from outer space, this cornfield maze with all its dun twists and turns was carved into this cornfield be real humans. They even have a miniature
tricycle maze for the younger set. Also, supervised games for the kids, pumpkin toss and plenty of eats. » Hotels in Dunn «
