Mexico IS high country!. About 47 miles after entering New Mexico from
Arizona you cross the western Continental Divide - frequently referred
to as the backbone of the western hemisphere. After miles and miles of nearly arid (but not as arid as it looks) desert you descend into the Rio Grande valley and the old city of Albuquerque. |
Albuquerque is the crossing place of one of the major north-south highways of the West: I-25. Southbound it takes you into El Paso TX and I-10. Northbound threads along the Rockies, through Santa Fe, Colorado Springs, Denver, Cheyenne and finally bumps into I-90 (which, takes over for I-25 and spurts north into Montana before heading west again). |
